I’d Buy It Again: Playa Ritual Oil (It’s Not Just For Summer)

Published:

September 12, 2017

In our line of work, we try a lot of products: that means we know what we love, and why. “I’d Buy It Again” is a quick and dirty way to tell you about something we’ve tried and all the reasons we love it. These are never sponsored posts—only opinions inspired by our obsessions.

WHAT’S THE BOTTOM LINE?

Probably the best hair oil I have ever used. I rarely write about hair products on Charlotte’s Book, but this one was worth the mention. You might think this “beach wave” hair care line is just for summer. It’s not. This perfect hair oil from Playa is perfect for dry ends, flyaways, and adding the perfect amount of shine all year long.

WHAT IS IT?

A hair oil to nourish dry ends, smooth flyaways, or to add shine.

WHO IS IT FOR?

Anyone that gets dry ends or frizz. I color my hair and I try my best to keep it healthy, but I still have dry ends, and sometimes you just need a little somethin’-somethin’ to make your hair shiny.

WHAT’S THE STORY?

Playa haircare was started by Shelby Wild and hairstylist Kristen Shaw. Shelby is a former fashion stylist who worked alongside Italian Vogue contributing editor Rushka Bergman and on the Intermix team before leaving New York and heading to Venice Beach. Their mission is to create that cool “get out of bed and go” beach hair style for everyone with their five-piece product line. But trust me, this line isn’t just for summer: the oil especially is perfect for everyday, and all year round. It’s super luxurious-feeling but also very lightweight.

INGREDIENTS?

Apricot, kukui, sunflower oil and coconut oil.

HOW DOES IT SMELL?

Very mild. No strong smell.

HOW DO YOU USE IT?

I put a tiny bit on my ends and flyaways when I’m drying and waving my hair, or if my ends are just looking a bit…eh. You can also add this oil to your hair every day after towel drying to help repair split ends or just add some moisture to your locks.

HOW LONG DID I TEST IT FOR?

About 7 weeks. And my colorist in New York just told me how healthy my hair has been looking.

HOW MUCH IS IT?

$38.00

WHERE CAN I BUY IT?

Violet Grey.

WORKS WELL WITH?

Any other hair products.Playa suggests using it with their Everyday shampoo or Supernatural conditioner. I have not tried these products yet.

WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT IT?

I love how lightweight but effective it is. A lot of “shine” products are full of silicon or are sticky and heavy. This oil gives your hair a perfect amount of shine. It’s like a “healthy glow” for your locks.

DRAWBACKS?

It’s a bit annoying getting the oil out of the dropper mechanism. The Playa packaging is beautiful but when I am rushing to get ready for the day or evening, I find the dropper mechanism of this product a bit tedious.

WOULD I BUY THIS AGAIN?

Yes.
