Botox: paralyzes the muscle to prevent or release wrinkles. Microcurrent: stimulates the muscle with electrical current to keep it young and limber.
But can they work together? Are they arch enemies? Can microcurrent replace Botox? Should it? To answer a few questions about how these two wrinkle-fighters work, we talked to esthetician Jordana Mattioli and Mila Morgan, a microcurrent specialist.
THE MILLION DOLLAR QUESTION: CAN IT REPLACE BOTOX?
New York esthetician Jordana Mattioli says, âIf you are diligent with microcurrent, and fine lines haven’t been etched into the skin yet, I believe it can almost replace Botox! Botox will relax a muscle so it doesn’t contract as much, where microcurrent can maintain muscle tone and generate controlled muscular activity.â
Mila Morgan, a microcurrent specialist practicing in Beverly Hills, agrees that microcurrent can replace Botox. âWhen microcurrent is done correctly it develops new collagen and elastin.â But, she goes on, âIt also depends on the kind of line and where on the face the lines are. Different wrinkles respond differently to microcurrent treatment.”
ARE MICROCURRENT AND BOTOX BFFS?
Where microcurrent works the muscle, Botox relaxes. Jordana explains, “Fillers will fill in a line or add volume but not be able to naturally sculpt and define large areas. Microcurrent will fix everything that Botox and fillers can’t: it’s like the cherry on top!â
She adds, âI love microcurrent for sculpting the jawline, cheeks and lifting the brows to open up the eyes. During a facial, I perform microcurrent once I’m done with exfoliation and extraction methods. Some clients pop in just for regular microcurrent if they don’t need a full facial.”
Jordana recommends waiting two to four weeks post-Botox or fillers before using microcurrent.
HOW DOES MUSCLE STIMULATION WITH MICROCURRENT WORK OVER TIME?
Commitment is key, Jordana explains: âMost clients see an immediate lift after a treatment, and that lift can last about five or six hours. After two sessions spaced a few days apart, that lift will last even longer, and so on. If you want to make a long term change in your face, commit to two sessions per week for a month. Then invest in a device to use at home three to five times a week, and get a professional treatment every three to four months.”
