Smoking and sun damage are primary causes of vertical lines on the lips, but just plain aging is another—this Charlotte’s Book reader asks how best to deal:Â
“I’m concerned about lip lines, and I’ve heard that the erbium laser is best. Is this true? If not, what’s the best course of action?”
We turned to John J. Martin, MD, a cosmetic surgeon with a private practice in Miami, to help us answer this reader’s question. Dr. Martin specializes in eye, facial and neck rejuvenation, as well as laser and other non-surgical treatment. Here’s what he said:
“There are many options for improving lip lines. Unfortunately, no treatment will remove 100% of the lines long-term. There are several lasers that can be used, including CO2 and erbium, and fractionated CO2 and erbium. These work to stimulate new collagen production under the skin to help improve the appearance of the wrinkles. Microneedling with radiofrequency is also showing great success in improving lip lines. Lips can also be filled in with a hyaluronic acid filler, such as Belotero or Restylane—these results usually last for several months.”
