Frosé all day? It’s a “no way” from me, unfortunately. While this summer’s most Instagrammable beverage is certainly delicious, its high sugar content (even before adding extra sugar, which most recipes do) and the fact it’s unlikely to be organic makes it a bad choice for the health-conscious among us. But all is not lost! Here are my best recommendations on what drinks to sip on this summer:
Try a frosé spritzer.
I suggest a healthier alternative of an organic rosé wine (such as this affordable option from Bonterra Wines). Simply turn it into a spritzer by adding a splash of club soda. This will help ensure you don’t miss your SoulCycle class the next morning. You can also pour the rosé over crushed ice cubes and blended strawberries.
Champagne and Prosecco are also “healthy” options.
Champagne and Prosecco are not only great summer choices, they’re actually good choices all year round. They’re both low in sugar and come in at around 70 calories a glass. The lack of tannins and additives make for a clearer head too (depending on how many glasses, of course). There are also a number of great organic options available at any budget.
My personal favorite: organic red wine.
When I drink, my beverage of choice is organic red wine. But I admit this can be a little heavy in the summer, so I suggest a chilled organic red at this time of year. Reds that taste great chilled include Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, and Grenache. I also recommend Fit Vine and Dry Farm Wines for clean, low-sugar reds.
Kombucha makes a great mixer too!
If you want to go all-out with your wellness focus this summer, take advantage of the kombucha cocktail trend. Your favorite kombucha makes a great mixer.
Still looking for a healthy, refreshing drink? Try this.
One of my favorite cocktails is my own creation, called the Glowing Greens Vodka Cocktail.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup maple water
- 1 cup frozen pineapple
- 1 cup baby spinach
- 1/2 cucumber
- 1 whole lime, peeled
- 1/2 cup fresh mint
- 2 fl. oz. vodka
- 1/2 cup ice
Place all ingredients in a blender and blend until smooth. And remember to always drink responsibly!
