Anit Hora of Mullein & Sparrow Shares Her Beauty File
My Beauty File is an on-going series where we figure out what the most timeless, put-together and coolest ladies are doing—what their days look like, what they can’t live without—in hopes that we might learn a thing or two. Beauty Files are a quick and easy cheat-sheet on how these incredible ladies are becoming their best selves. Anit Hora was born in India but grew up in New York City. Her apothecary line, Mullein & Sparrow, is inspired by the ayurvedic practices she grew up with—she hand-distills everything, and the results are luxurious, vegan, plant-based skincare that works. Anit is also a licensed esthetician. Here's a peek into what she uses on her skin everyday, why she takes ashwaganda, and how she believes a facialist can truly change your skin.
Morning Skincare:
I wash my face with Mullein & Sparrow Lemon Rose Face Wash using a Clarisonic brush. The gentle brushing action stimulates circulation and makes my skin look and feel refreshed. The pure castile soap in the Lemon Rose Face Wash gently cleanses away any build up on my combination skin without over drying it. After cleansing, I mist with the Mullein & Sparrow Balancing Face Mist and and then dab some Rosemary & Clary Sage serum on my T-zone, spreading outwards.
Morning Breakfast:
I love unsweetened black tea and oatmeal with some fresh fruit.
Night Skincare:
I like to oil cleanse my skin first. At Mullein & Sparrow we have a Frankincense Cleansing Oil that I use. Twice a week I like to mix some of our Sandalwood Cleansing Powder with the cleansing oil and scrub away any skin impurities. I follow this with the Lemon Rose face wash on the days I have a lot of makeup on. I like to finish with a hydrating face mist and our Immortelle Face Serum and eye serum at night.
Supplements:
I like to use ashwaganda for adrenal support and brahmi for stamina and mental support. I also like to make herbal teas specific to what’s going on with my body.
Fitness:
I train 3 times a week at a gym. I used to have a regular yoga practice, but it’s getting harder to fit it into the schedule. Restorative yoga is still my favorite thing to do, especially living in New York, and I try to get it in when I can.
Tech:
For me the Clarisonic and the NuFace are a must. There are some great estheticians in New York who offer great microcurrent treatments that really rejuvenate your skin.
Hair:
For Mullein & Sparrow we used to make an ayurvedic hair tonic which I still make for my personal use. It’s a blend of nourishing oils and healing herbs that I apply about once a week and leave in my hair overnight. The most I wash my hair is twice a week because natural oils are healthy for your hair and scalp.
Dermatologist Or Facialist:
Facialist! I am a licensed esthetician and I’ve seen how regular visits can really change someone’s skin.
Wellness:
There are obvious things one can do like eat well and stay active, but for me the bottom line with wellness is about finding that inner balance. It’s about staying grounded no matter what is going on around me and staying connected to my most authentic voice as much as possible.
My Best Piece of Beauty Advice:
Keep it simple. Over processed skin doesn’t look good on anyone so take it easy and be kind to yourself! People think if they look good then they’ll feel good, but it’s the other way around. If you feel good, you immediately start looking better to everyone around you. Nothing makes your skin glow like inner calm and a good night’s rest!
My Best Piece of Life Advice:
Try to live a balanced life the best you can. Perfection is impossible, so strive for equilibrium. If you’re having a tough time at work or in life generally, remember that self -care and taking time to replenish isn’t a luxury, but a necessity.
Biggest Beauty Myth:
Beauty is the biggest myth. Don’t buy into other people’s ideas of what beauty is or isn’t. You will never feel as beautiful as when you define it for yourself and own it.
My Charlotte:
I am surrounded by so many creators and makers and am constantly in awe of how many wonderful and inspiring ladies I have the chance to meet. But the original Charlotte, the biggest and most constant source of inspiration, would be my mama. She is the epitome of strength and tenderness and I still have a lot to learn from her.
