Your Morning Routine Just Got A Bit More Stimulating
The temperature is dropping, making it a prime time to focus on exfoliation. You're no longer dealing with summer heat and humidity, which can make skin very sensitive—plus, your tan has gone from fab to drab; it's time to work on that body glow. Fall is the perfect time for dry brushing! By now you might have heard of the great exfoliating benefits of dry brushing, but there's more. Thanks to its stimulation of the lymphatic system, you might also start to consider it as part of your wellness routine.
A HEALTHY HABIT - YOUR LYMPH SYSTEM WILL THANK YOU
Your lymphatic system is hundreds of miles long (!) and carries waste and toxins from the body through the blood. Dry brushing increases circulation in the skin, which enhances the elimination of metabolic waste—it actually helps to clean the body. The exfoliating benefits from this practice help unclog pores, allowing your skin to breathe. Some naturopaths suggest dry brushing to improve liver and kidney function. For these reasons, a regular routine of dry brushing may actually help prevent you from getting sick.
BEST PRACTICES - DO IT IN THE MORNING
It is highly recommended to practice dry brushing in the morning as increased blood circulation provides a boost of energy. Alternatively, some find it as relaxing as a massage. See what works for you. It is also worth noting that you might find dry brushing uncomfortable at first. No matter how many scrubs you have done, the soft bristles of a body brush feel very different. Go to a natural market to buy your brush (instead of buying it online) to make sure the bristles are super soft. Try to give yourself a bit of extra time when you begin this practice. I prefer to stand in the shower and do a quick brush before showering. Always use long light strokes towards the heart and apply your favorite moisturizer after cleansing. Image: Happy Body Formula
