Bobbi Brown's New Book Is Full Of Confidence, Supplements, and So Much More: We Love It
Bobbi Brown requires no introduction. If I had to pick one “Charlotte,” Bobbi would be at the top of my list. She built a beauty empire that empowers women, and it all started with a lipstick. "I was always fixing bad lipstick,” she explains. “I wanted to make a lipstick that looked like lips." That point of view—an honest approach to powerful, beautiful women—is infused in every part of Bobbi Brown’s products, identity, and vision. She makes us all feel #prettypowerful while still celebrating ourselves. So when I read Bobbi’s new book, Beauty from the Inside Out, I was beyond excited. The bottom line? I really, really love it. And you know me—if I’m anything, I’m honest. For Bobbi’s new book (her ninth, by the way), she's partnered up with Lily Kunin, aka Clean Food Dirty City. But what’s most exciting to me about this book was that Bobbi keeps it real, keeps it simple, and keeps it practical. Despite so many beauty and wellness books on the market, it’s practically impossible to find the ones that speak to your lifestyle: Bobbi’s book does just that, and easily. She really breaks it down into easily digestible tidbits. There are even simple charts detailing which vitamins are good for acne, hair, aging, skin, and nails. (Hint: the same vitamin or supplement which is good for skin in general might not be good for acne.) And with chapters like “Be Zen,” “Confidence,” and “Strength,” the book is full of guidance and lessons that are easy and approachable. Bobbi’s viewpoint is straightforward, and that comes through loud and clear in her guide—and that’s truly what it is, in many ways—a thorough, thoughtful reference manual. From the vitamin and herb guide to easy recipes to yoga poses, there’s a little bit of something for everyone. Speaking directly to the Charlotte’s Book mantra, there’s even a section on transforming treatments and what really works (the Clear & Brilliant laser is included). I also love the inspiration section, which includes Maye Musk (who you know we love), Laila Ali, and Elle Macpherson. Beauty from the Inside Out is far from trendy: the latest diet is not included. In fact, in the introduction, Bobbi admits to being susceptible to diet trends until she really understood the connection of beauty and food. With gorgeous photographs and an easy-to-reference layout, this is a book you’ll want to keep around. In fact, rather than a coffee table book, this should be a vanity book: keep it right where you need it. Here are five things we learned about Bobbi:
Bobbi wants you to feel unstoppable—no matter your height or what you look like.
“I still spend a lot of time with gorgeous women, models, actresses, and influencers from all over. I get photographed with them all, and even in my five-inch YSL Tribute heels, I’m still smaller than most. (If I’m not being photographed, I am most likely in my sneakers. I choose comfort over height nearly every time.) I take pride in my collection of photos with super-tall people—and secretly cherish my photo with Dr. Ruth, who is one of the few people I tower over. There is a difference in people who are confident. Not only does confidence make you more attractive, it makes you feel unstoppable. There are many ways to find confidence. One of the keys is surrounding yourself with people who build you up and are there when you need them.”
Bobbi loves seeds.
“Flax seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds: I put these seeds into pretty much everything—smoothies, oatmeal, and desserts. They are all full of protein, fiber, and omega-3s.”
She doesn’t like Botox, but she did like Ultherapy.
“I first tried Botox in my 40s. I didn’t like it. I couldn’t move my forehead. I looked altered. Once, it gave me a pointy eyebrow, and another time it caused one eye to droop. It definitely wasn’t for me. I have done lasers and loved them—I’ve zapped off sunspots and, after a little bit of pain, the treatment works wonders. I’ve also had Ultherapy, an ultrasound treatment, and Thermage, a radio-frequency treatment, both of which were more than mildly painful, but also super-effective in producing collagen, lifting, and tightening.”
Bobbi is obsessed with greens.
“A scoop of green nutrient powder mixed with a glass of water is a great way to start the day and make my system more alkaline and less acidic. My favorite powders right now are WelleCo’s Super Elixir Alkalising Greens and AlkaMind Daily Greens. They give me that extra burst of energy and are packed with foods and nutrients I may not get every day, such as wheatgrass, dandelion leaf, chlorophyll, chlorella, and sprouts.”
Bobbi loves supplements but warns they can't replace a healthy diet.
“As a baseline I take supplements for nutrients that are difficult to get from food alone (and naturally lacking in most people). I take fish oil, a probiotic, and vitamin D3. The omega-3s in the fish oil and the probiotic boost gut health, which can help to heal and prevent skin issues, increase skin elasticity, promote hair growth, and possibly even reduce the appearance of lines. Vitamin D3 is excellent for preventing cognitive decline and heart disease. For stress, a B-complex vitamin is a good addition, as B vitamins aren’t stored in your body and they help with energy, mood, and brain function. For improved sleep, try magnesium, which balances the nervous system and helps you relax, and melatonin, which is a hormone linked to sleep.
