Plunging Necklines: How Ultherapy Can Firm Your Décolletage
This year, the Golden Globes exposed a certain trend—and a certain décolletage. Plunging necklines dominated the red carpet, with everyone from Jessica Biel, Mandy Moore, and even Laura Dern showing off a perky, well cared-for set of curves and a moisturized, spotless chest. Unfortunately for women of a certain age (or a certain sun exposure), the neck and chest area is often the first telltale sign of youth gone by, riddled with wrinkles, dark spots, and dull, slack skin. "Traditionally, it's been a neglected area. People will slather sunscreen all over their face, but they don't think of covering the chest, which is often just as exposed to the elements as the face. As a result, their chest will show more visible signs of aging than their face," explains cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Doris Day, who has a private cosmetic dermatology practice, Day Dermatology and Aesthetics, on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. As New York City cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Paul Frank aptly put it, “You see these women with beautiful ageless faces walking down the street, but their chest just doesn't match up. In cosmetic dermatology, there is now a bigger focus on the body so that everything can look seamless." Which brings us to this bit of techy news: Ultherapy is FDA-cleared as the first non-invasive procedure to lift the décolletage area. Similar to how Ultherapy works to lift the neck, eyebrow and chin areas, the new Ultherapy décolletage firming treatment uses ultrasound technology to stimulate the body’s own natural collagen and elastin, which strengthens the skin’s foundation, gradually smoothing out wrinkles and firming the skin on the chest.
"Since Ultherapy doesn't disrupt the top layer of skin, you don't have to worry about sun exposure immediately following the procedure, which means you can do it at any time of year. And, it only takes 30 minutes," says Dr. Day.
In other words, we can safely and effectively have our décolletages treated on our lunch break, with no downtime or limitations like avoiding sun exposure—although you should always wear your sunscreen. This aging stuff is getting easier every day, isn't it?
