My fast and effective 5 step vitamin and mineral supplement stack
Brands to buy and NOT to buy
I am crazy with supplements. For the last 25 years - even before supplements became in vogue - I have been trialing various supplements and supplement brands. There are now so many supplements that your head can explode. There have been times in my life where I have taken no less than 20 different pills a day. But more often than not, this routine is just not sustainable. And just like skincare, the same goes with supplements, the best supplements for you are the ones that you take consistently. In other words, the best routine is the one you are actually going to follow. So my current supplement stack is built in the same way. Easy to adhere to everyday and effective. Could I do more? Sure. But there are only so many minutes in the morning and so many powders and tinctures and pills one human can take.
In light of valuing consistency and efficacy above all else, I listed the generic ingredients and then put in my recommended brands and the brands I do not recommend.
1. Zinc Methionine Tablets
In short: This supplement has been a staple in my routine for over 10 years. It’s easy to take, it’s inexpensive, and I notice a marked difference when I don’t take them. To me, it’s important to take this particular form of zinc. It is very bioavailable and I do see a difference versus other forms. Check out this study from the National Library of Medicine that details its bioavailability and antioxidant and immune-enhancing properties.
Where to buy it: Source Naturals OptiZinc Zinc Methionine Sulfate Complex on Amazon, $5.78. I have tried a ton of other zinc products. They don’t measure up. They either upset my stomache, the dosage is wrong or the forms of zinc are not as good. Avoid Nature’s Bounty and Nature Made. I even avoid Pure Encapsulations and Thorne Zinc because it’s not the same form. However, those brands make other products I use.
How to take it: One pill with lunch or dinner. Don’t take on an empty stomach.
Why: Zinc helps with everything from immunity to skin health. I started taking zinc in my early 30s to help me recover from the hormone imbalance I was struggling with after freezing my embryos. It was life changing. This magic little pill keeps me well. I rarely if ever get sick. It also helps me balance my hormones and keeps cystic and hormonal acne at bay. Plus, zinc is a co-factor in the production of collagen; an essential building block of collagen playing a vital role in collagen synthesis. This mineral is essential to cell repair and helps protect collagen in the body from damage.
2. Trace Mineral Drops
In short: Also called micro minerals, these are essential minerals that the body must get from food, but, unlike macro minerals, your body only needs a very small amount. Trace minerals help with important bodily functions, including hormone production, metabolism, and nerve and thyroid function.
Where to buy it: Trace Minerals on Amazon, $24. Avoid the imposter brands here, Trace Minerals sourcing is second to none.
How to take it: Drip into a glass of water in the morning. Or into your juice or whatever you are drinking. It’s super simple and takes zero time commitment for massive benefit.
Why: You will feel the difference when you take these minerals consistently everyday. Some of the most obvious trace mineral deficiency symptoms are anemia, fatigue, poor digestion, chronic fatigue and brain fog. In today’s modern world, naturally occurring, nutrient-rich soil is becoming increasingly rare. And we don’t eat food from the earth anymore, unless you are doing all of your shopping and eating from your local farmstand, you are likely mineral deficient.
3. Omega Gummies
In short: Everyone needs omegas. Not just any omegas, the right balance of omegas. Omegas taste incredibly bad. I absolutely love the quality of Udo’s Choice Oil. I have been a dedicated user for over 15 years. However, it tastes awful and as a result of the awful taste, my consistency with taking it is varied at best. It’s a chore everyday and taking a teaspoon of this oil. It’s one of the reasons I created the Omega Yummy Gummy for SG’s wellness line. It’s an omega gummy that tastes great and has the exact right mix of just what you need.
Where to buy it: The SG Wellness website, $35. They are also available on Amazon.
How to take it: Eat 3-5 gummies everyday any time of day. Easy to do with a huge benefit.
Why: This specialty blend includes a special mix of omega 3-6-9 (Alpha-Linolenic Acid, Linoleic Acid, and Oleic Acid) and DHA. When you take the right omegas consistently, your hair is better, your skin is better, your eyes aren’t as dry, your circulation is better, your mood is better, your intimate health is better. Your connectivity to life is better. Big and bold statements I know, but this is how I feel.
4. Concentrated bone broth
In short: So this isn’t a supplement but its collagen boosting and I prefer to take this than a collagen supplement. It’s easier, tastes better and more nutrient rich. A teaspoon of this is something I can easily eat each day versus a horrible tasting and less effective powder. Real bone broth has so many benefits for your gut and your collagen production. I don’t need to hammer home the benefits as the internet has them ad naseum. And unless you have been living under a beauty rock you already know the benefits of bone broth.
Where to buy it: Gevity website. They ship to the USA. I buy 3 at a time and each jar makes about 40 cups. This brand tastes infinitely better than anything you will find in the US market. It’s made with 100% grass-fed Australian beef bones. The only other brand I found that makes a concentrate is Australian Bone Broth Company but it doesn’t taste even 1/2 as good. I absolutely do not recommend buying this product.
How to take it: Mix one concentrated teaspoon into a hot glass of water every morning.
Why: This concentrated jar is so easy to store and use. Don’t be fooled by fakes and using powders that don’t have any real benefits. Understanding the sourcing of your bone broth is essential. I only use concentrated bone broth brand Gevity. I discovered the brand while traveling in Australia. It’s the only concentrated gel I have come across anywhere. Keeping large containers of liquid bone broth in your fridge is a giant pain in the ass and quite honestly, who has the time, the space or the budget for that? When I wake up in the morning I drink one glass of cold water, a quick cup of bone broth and then my coffee. This brand makes it easy, tasty, and cost effective. One jar lasts me about a month or so.
