My End-Of-Summer Slump Is In Full Effect. Here's My Quick Guide To A Post-Summer Reboot.
So many weekends of indulgence, a Fourth of July grill-fest, heavy August drinking, and all of a sudden I see puffy red eyes, the peek of a wine belly, the onslaught of new pimples, and is it just me, or are my jeans feeling tight? All the work I did in the spring to get summer-ready is rendered pointless, and now I'm paying for all the fun I had. Right about now, I need to seriously recommit to my beauty and wellness goals. These are some of the simple things I do to get back on the right track, plus some advice from our fabulous experts.
1. I book a slew of September treatments to help banish summer damage.
The first thing I do at the end of summer is book a complete beauty and skin refresh. I book a color update with my longtime colorist Sophie Georgiou and a fresh cut with Chris Lospalluto, both at Serge Normant. (They've been doing my hair for over 10 years now!) Then I book either a Clear + Brilliant or microneedling appointment for September. If I freshen up my skin and hair (and of course, stay on top of potential sun spots despite my extensive use of sunscreen), it also motivates me to get back on track with my eating. I know it sounds weird...but it's true. I won't reach for a scoop of gelato after dinner if I'm feeling fresh and glowing.
2. I switch up my current exercise plan. New = easier to commit.
Just because you've been back and forth from weekends in the Hamptons/upstate/anywhere ten degrees cooler than New York City doesn't give you the excuse to duck out of your normal exercise routine. But it does give you a chance to change things up. Check out Anna Kaiser's streaming videos (so worth it) or any of these great exercise apps. Now that summer is over, try committing to a new workout plan. It's that simple. It's usually easier to commit to something new and exciting. So switch it up! Plus, do not underestimate the importance of weights. "Resistance training will put on lean muscle mass and increase metabolism," says Heather Marr, The Model Trainer.
3. I spend some time with chlorophyll.
"Chlorophyll cures nutritional sins," Dana James, CB-approved nutritionist, says. It not only helps your liver by taking on some of last night’s toxin removal project, but it also nourishes your liver with oxygen and magnesium.
4. I admit that it's time to lay off the rosé, and quite frankly, the wine altogether.
We know red wine has amazing health benefits, but it has a ton of calories too. We also know that laying off alcohol altogether—especially in the summer—is practically impossible. But my summer wine belly is peaking through. If I can't find it in me to stop indulging in alcohol completely, as a compromise, I like to ask for a Tito’s martini dry with extra ice, and to be served with the shaker. Tito’s is gluten-free, and the ice dilutes the vodka so you can sip on this drink for quite a while. I'll still get my buzz on but cut down the wine calories. I also love tequila straight.
5. I cut down the carbs (seriously).
During summer, it's super easy to get fresh fruits and vegetables. But it's also easy to indulge in burgers, homemade pizzas, and carb-filled fruit smoothies. I know I'm guilty of it. I also get stuck in the gluten-free trap. “Low-carb” and “gluten-free” still mean calories. They don't give you a license to eat all you want. That said, don't starve yourself of carbs; just get laser-focused on eating the right carbs.
6. I spend 10 minutes a day meditating.
I often have this goal. I rarely keep it. But when I do, it's magical. So I'm recommitting to my meditation practice. (I recently purchased a Prana mat to really commit.) Here's what I recommend: Lay on your mat for 10 minutes a day, either in the morning or at night. Make sure your phone is on airplane mode during these 10 minutes. If it helps, use the Headspace app. Staying mentally focused on your goals will make all the difference.
