Robin, smart post, and thank you from an almost 76-year-old who's past the blow-up-your-life tropes with a couple of suggestions: A beauty budget definitely does NOT have to increase as you age but we may become more vulnerable to the fear-mongering-marketing aimed at us. My advice: Don't fall for it. (For more on that, go to HNTFUYF, obv.) And a new book by financial advisor Jean Chatsky can be extremely helpful and reassuring: The Forever Paycheck. Worth the $32 investment. x

This was so real. Super funny too. I loved it.

I have friends who are so caught up in mirroring a life they see in social media without understanding that what they are seeing there is not real, and usually unattainable in reality. It causes so much unhappiness.

There’s always real work we can do to make ourselves and our situations better, but it starts with a good grasp of where we stand and which next steps are available. Such a cool article. Thanks!

This is so good and smart. I’ve witnessed the aftermath of some of this “burn down your life” business and it’s not pretty. Change and grow, of course, but with a healthy dose of reality.

I’d love to see more of this! I honestly need a for-dummies version of how to save for the non-essentials we may want (like the facelift). Is it a specific high-yield savings account? A CD? This is so far from my wheelhouse, but I always feel like I’m doing it wrong when it comes to saving/investing/growing $. Xx

One suggestion — get off Instagram, Facebook, tik tok, i.e., every place that leads you to such fantasies, & experience your real life for a while. It may be as bad as you believe, or maybe, in the real world, it isn't. You owe it to yourself to take a good, hard look at reality.
